On April 7, the legendary football coach Mircea Lucescu passed away. He was 80 years old…
Mircea Lucescu devoted his life to football from the early 1960s. During his playing career, he represented the Romanian clubs Dinamo Bucharest (1963–1977), Sportul (1965–1967) and Corvinul (1977–1982). He was the captain of the Romania national team. Lucescu’s coaching career began in 1978 at Corvinul. He later managed the Romania national team, Dinamo Bucharest, Italian sides Pisa, Brescia, Reggiana and Inter, as well as Rapid Bucharest and Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Beşiktaş.
The main club of Mircea Lucescu’s managerial career was Shakhtar, whom he led from 2004 to 2016. The Miners played 573 matches under his leadership. The Romanian coach won 22 trophies together with the Pitmen: 8 Ukrainian Premier League titles, 6 Ukrainian Cups and 7 Ukrainian Super Cups, as well as the club’s first European trophy – the 2009 UEFA Cup. Mircea Lucescu holds the club record for the most seasons, matches and titles won, and is the most successful manager in Shakhtar’s history.
Mircea Lucescu remained active in coaching until the final days of his life. His last position was with the Romania national team. Over nearly 48 years of his managerial career, he won 35 trophies and is among the most decorated coaches in world football. He is also the oldest coach in UEFA Champions League history and among national team managers in world football.
