Shakhtar youth team entertained their Karpaty counterparts in the postponed MD17 fixture of the U19 National League
There were quite a few changes in the Shakhtar U19 line-up compared with the previous league match. Assistant head coach Oleksandr Alimov selected the following starting XI for the game against Karpaty U19: Chympoiesh was in goal, Kaliuzhnyi and Kostiuk appeared as the full-backs, Onishchuk and Mylokost started in central defence, Bundash, Smetana and Tiutiunov formed the midfield, Strilchuk and Tsukanov operated on the attacking flanks, with Kanteh taking the centre-forward position.
A half with chances, but no goals
The opponents started with an even battle across all areas of the pitch, without forcing the tempo near either goal. The Miners spent more time in the opposition half, while the Lviv side focused on a compact defensive block and quick counterattacks with direct balls towards the centre-forward after winning possession. The first truly dangerous chance came in the 18th minute near Poteraiko’s goal, when Smetana met a cross from the flank with a header inside the penalty area, but the goalkeeper reacted in time and gathered the ball. Shortly afterwards, the Green-and-Whites responded with a long-range effort from Tsymbalistyi – Chympoiesh dealt with the shot comfortably. In the 35th minute, Kanteh had a great chance to put the Orange-and-Blacks ahead: after a through ball from deep, he lifted it over the goalkeeper but failed to direct the it on target. Towards the end of the first half, the Miners, pressing in the opposition half, tried to break into the final third, but were unable to create any real threat.
Control of the game and goals from Tsukanov and Kanteh
After the break, Harmash replaced Onishchuk. The second half was started more aggressively by the Miners: they immediately established themselves in the opposition half and threatened Poteraiko’s goal. For a moment, Karpaty U19 pushed Shakhtar U19 back and came close to Chympoiesh’s goal, when Diedov tried to turn and shoot during the attack, but the effort was blocked by Kostiuk, who stayed tight on his opponent. In the 64th minute, Smetana had a promising opportunity from a set piece, but the goalkeeper reacted to his shot under the crossbar. Later, both teams committed frequent fouls, breaking up potential attacks and disrupting the tempo. Eventually, it was after Karpaty’s free-kick that the Orange-and-Blacks produced a quick attacking move, which Tsukanov finished with a precise strike after taking up the right position. Kanteh came close to doubling the lead after a pass from Tsukanov – Poteraiko saved his effort, but in the next phase of play, the centre-forward made no mistake, converting Zubrii’s low cross and giving the goalkeeper no chance. The closing minutes were played with Shakhtar in territorial control.
