The president and top management of FC Shakhtar honoured the memory of legendary coach Mircea Lucescu
On Thursday, April 9, the president and top management of FC Shakhtar honoured the memory of legendary coach Mircea Lucescu at the National Stadium in Bucharest.
Club president Rinat Akhmetov, CEO Serhii Palkin, sporting director Darijo Srna and assistant head coach Carlo Nicolini laid flowers, honoured the coach’s memory and expressed their support to his family and loved ones.

– I have come to say goodbye to my friend. This is a huge tragedy for everyone. We went through a 12-year journey together at Shakhtar and won 22 trophies: the UEFA Cup, eight league titles, six Ukrainian Cups and seven Super Cups. I am proud of our friendship. I hope and believe that you will also be proud of such a person. He was a great coach and a great man who lived a happy life. He could not sit idle; he was always fighting. I have come here to say goodbye to him and to express my gratitude to him as a great coach and a great man. I extend my condolences to his wife Neli and his son Răzvan. It is a beautiful, kind family.
Mircea Lucescu’s name will forever remain in Shakhtar’s history. Under his leadership, the club won 22 trophies, including its first European one – the 2009 UEFA Cup, set records for the number of matches and titles, and established a style that became the team’s hallmark.
