On August 23, the Miners played two friendly matches in Vynnyky
Taking advantage of the two-week break in the Ukrainian Premier League, Arda Turan’s side played two training games with different line-ups. Both friendlies took place at the pitch of the Emily Resort hotel complex in Vynnyky.
Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 (2-0) Nyva Ternopil

In the first game, the Miners faced Nyva Ternopil from the First League. The Pitmen made a confident start and opened the scoring as early as the 14th minute: Mendoza intercepted the ball, Meirelles played a fine pass into the right side of the penalty area, where Oleksandr Karavaiev broke through and beat the goalkeeper – 1-0. Shakhtar doubled their lead towards the end of the half: in the 40th minute, Bondar found Luca Meirelles with a pass just outside the penalty area, and he fired into the bottom left corner without hesitation – 2-0. The pattern of the game hardly changed after the break, with the Miners continuing to control proceedings and create chances. Shakhtar’s third goal was therefore no surprise. In the 58th minute, Alisson picked out Gleiker Mendoza on the left side of the penalty area, with the latter shrugging off his marker before firing powerfully under the crossbar to make it 3-0. Both teams continued to play at a good tempo and looked for opportunities to threaten, but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.

In the second friendly, the Ukrainian champions faced amateur side Kormil from Lviv Oblast. It is worth noting that Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Carvalho, the club’s new signing, started the match for the Orange-and-Blacks. Arda Turan’s side again enjoyed a clear advantage, dominating possession and combining almost at will in the opposition half. Although Kormil Yavoriv created the first chance of the game, hitting the post with a shot from outside the penalty area, it was the Pitmen who opened the scoring. In the 31st minute, a fine vertical attack involving five Miners ended with Marlon Gomes through on goal and slotting the ball underneath the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Bruninho, Kaua Elias, Carvalho and substitute Lucas all had chances to score afterwards, but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.
Arda Turan’s side will play their next competitive match on August 29, when Shakhtar host Polissia in the Ukrainian Premier League’s round 4 centrepiece game.
