Shakhtar youth team wrapped up the first cycle of their training camp with a friendly against Obolon U19

Head coach of the Orange-and-Blacks Oleksii Bielik named the following starting XI for the clash with Obolon U19: Kicha was in goal, Harabazhii and Onishchuk formed the central defensive pair, Kaliuzhnyi and Strilchuk operated on the flanks, Smetana, Tiutiunov, and Bundash appeared in midfield, Petruk and Zubrii played on the wings, with Tverdokhlib taking the centre-forward position.

The Miners’ dominance

Shakhtar footballers took a noticeable territorial advantage from the opening minutes and turned it into a goalscoring chance for Smetana, whose shot was expertly saved by the goalkeeper. The Brewers responded following a corner, when the ball lingered in the penalty area after a series of rebounds, but it never reached a proper shot. Afterwards, both teams avoided forcing the play and took turns looking for openings in the final third. The more dangerous side were the Orange-and-Blacks, and a great opportunity to open the scoring went begging after a foul on Smetana in the penalty area and a penalty awarded – Bundash struck the post. The next attack, however, proved successful – Tiutiunov’s precise shot into the far corner put the Pitmen ahead. It took the Miners just three minutes to double their advantage: Bundash, breaking through to the goalkeeper, was brought down by a defender, and the referee rightly awarded a penalty, which the captain converted. Soon afterwards, the Green-and-Whites had promising opportunities to reduce the gap. Hadakivskyi was particularly dangerous, but his series of shots were successfully blocked by Shakhtar defenders. Ultimately, the Pitmen launched a swift counterattack, which Smetana finished with a decisive header. The Brewers tried to regain possession and change the situation, but after a misplaced pass, Smetana capitalised on the loose ball, went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and struck the bottom corner. Towards the end of the half, Obolon U19 finally managed to score: Moroz found space and fired a powerful shot, leaving Kicha with no chance.

Squad rotation and playing on top

In the second half, Shakhtar U19 head coach made extensive squad rotation, aiming to give the players as much playing time as possible. The Miners continued to have the initiative and press the opponents’ goal. First, Chornenkyi scored following a slick one-touch combination, and later Sereda found his own opportunity. The Brewers operated from a defensive position and tried to counterattack, but Shakhtar’s defenders skilfully blocked their attempts and quickly launched attacks in response. Shortly afterwards, Balakai came close to scoring, curling a shot from the edge of the centre circle straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. Despite their significant advantage, the Miners did not ease off and continued playing fluidly near the penalty area, forcing the opponents to act without the ball. In the 72nd minute, the Pitmen once again broke through the opposition’s defence – Harmash scored. The closing minutes of the match were full of chances: Kostiuk and Chornenkyi converted theirs successfully, and Balakai’s final goal sealed the win.

10-1 – Shakhtar youth side secured a crushing victory their Obolon counterparts from the capital in their first pre-season friendly. With this match, the Miners concluded their training cycle at the Academy in Shchaslyve and will depart for Türkiye tomorrow morning to continue preparations for the second half of the championship.
