On July 23, the Miners played the third pre-season game against Croatian side Gorica
Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan continued to test different line-up combinations and selected the following starting XI for the third friendly: Tvardovskyi started in goal, Matviienko and Bondar partnered in central defence, Karavaiev and Pedro Henrique played at full-back, Nazaryna, Marlon Gomes and Pedrinho were in midfield, Alisson and Prosper operated on the wings, with Kaua Elias leading the attack.
Shakhtar on top and Pedrinho’s deserved opener
Shakhtar took control from the opening whistle and created several dangerous chances early on: Pedro Henrique’s effort towards the near post was kept out by the goalkeeper, before Pedrinho fired over the crossbar from the edge of the area. Marlon Gomes came close after meeting Pedrinho’s cross with a header from close range, but a Gorica defender cleared the ball off the line. Soon afterwards, Nazaryna unleashed a powerful long-ranger that the Gorica goalkeeper tipped over the bar. Kaua Elias then had the best chance of the opening spell: Matijas saved Pedro Henrique’s shot from distance, but the forward, following up from the left side of the penalty area, failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy. Only midway through the first half did the visitors manage to push play away from their own penalty area and create a chance of their own, though Pavicic fired over the bar. The Pitmen stepped up the pressure again before the break. Kaua Elias headed wide, but in the 40th minutes, the Ukrainian champions finally made the breakthrough: Alisson passed the ball to Pedrinho on the edge of the box, with the midfielder calmly placing his finish inside the near right post to make it 1-0.
Outfield changes and Alisson’s goal
At half-time, the Shakhtar coaching staff made several changes, with Ghram, Vinicius Tobias, Bondarenko and Traore coming on. The Orange-and-Blacks started the second half brightly and quickly doubled their lead. In the 52nd minute, Pedrinho delivered a corner from the left and Alisson arrived from deep to power a header into the right corner – 2-0. In the 63rd minute, the Pitmen made another wave of substitutions, introducing Marlon Santos, Gocholeishvili, Newertton, Tsukanov, Bruninho and Ryan Roberto. Once again, the Croatians briefly gained the upper hand midway through the half, but their only real threat came from Bakic’s long-range effort, which Tvardovskyi gathered comfortably. In response, Gocholeishvili came close to producing a moment of brilliance, but his curling effort from outside the box drifted just inches over the crossbar. The closing stages were played almost entirely in attack by Arda Turan's side and Ryan Roberto had the chance to put the result beyond doubt: the Brazilian struck from the left side of the penalty area, but his effort flew just wide of the post.
2-0 – Shakhtar defeated Croatian side Gorica in their third friendly of the summer training camp.
The Miners will play the next game against Saudi First Division League side Al-Ula on Saturday, July 25. Kickoff is at 19:00 Kyiv time.
