Shakhtar played away against Polish champions Lech in the UEFA Conference League Round of 16 first leg

Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan selected the following starting line-up for this encounter: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Bondar and Marlon Santos were in central defence, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique operated on the defensive flanks, Ocheretko, Pedrinho and Kryskiv started in midfield, with Alisson, Newertton and Kaua Elias forming the attacking trio.

Dominant style with a goal from Marlon Gomes

From the start of the match, the Orange-and-Blacks held a clear territorial advantage and played on top. The opening phase saw both sides cancelling each other out, but without any real threat near the goal, and Shakhtar created their first chance after 20 minutes: Kaua Elias carried the ball through the centre on his own and shot towards the left corner – the Poznań side goalkeeper reacted. In the middle of the half, Dmytro Kryskiv suffered an injury and Marlon Gomes came on in his place. The Pitmen became more active again, and while Newertton’s long-ranger was parried by Mrozek, in the 36th minute the visitors managed to open the scoring: Kaua Elias fought for the ball in midfield against three opponents and backheeled it to the left to Marlon Gomes, who burst into the free space in the penalty area and fired low past the goalkeeper – 0-1. In stoppage time of the first half, the Miners could have doubled their advantage when Pedrinho set Newertton through on goal, but he failed to beat the Polish keeper.

Winning goal from Newertton and a spectacular strike from Isaque

Shakhtar were able to double their lead almost immediately after the break. In the 48th minute, Marlon Gomes’s run and Kaua Elias’ shot were blocked by the home defenders, but the ball bounced to Newertton, who calmly found the net – 0-2. The Miners continued to press forward, and Newertton, having won a dangerous free-kick, stepped up to take it: the first attempt hit the wall and the second was parried by the Poznań side goalkeeper on the goal line. In the middle of the second half, the Poles became noticeably more active, creating a threat in the visitors’ penalty area and, as a result, scoring a goal. Initially, Ismaheel’s header was blocked by Riznyk, but the attack continued, and Pereira’s cross was finished by Lech’s top scorer Ishak, reducing the deficit in the 70th minute. Arda Turan responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Nazaryna, Isaque and Lucas. Thanks to the fresh players, the Orange-and-Blacks increased the tempo late in the game and managed to restore a comfortable two-goal advantage: in the 86th minute, following a quick attack, the ball reached Isaque, who struck from the left side of the goal area with an incredible overhead kick into the far corner!
