Shakhtar youth team faced Oleksandriia U19 away in the U19 National League round 19

Shakhtar U19 head coach Oleksii Bielik made the following changes to the starting line-up compared with the previous match against Oleksandriia U19: Kostiuk and Smetana started instead of Onishchuk and Balakai.

Successful pressing and efficient finishing

The Orange-and-Blacks started with high pressing and, as a result, capitalised on an early mistake by the opponents to take the lead: Kanteh intercepted the ball and set up Smetana for a shot. The Citizens tried to take control of the ball and find a way through to Bahlay’s goal, but without success. Meanwhile, the Miners were more active in possession and created several chances. Smetana had the best opportunity to double the lead, narrowly missing near the post. Shakhtar advanced the ball mainly through their flanks, and in the 31st minute, Zubrii threatened Stovb’s goal after a long ball that unsettled the opposition defence – the goalkeeper reacted to the danger. A minute later, an air raid alert was announced in Kirovohrad Oblast and the match was paused for 10 minutes. After returning to the pitch, the Miners quickly doubled their lead: Kanteh once again pressured the Citizens’ defenders, regained the ball and played it to Petruk, who shot into the bottom corner. The final phase of the first half proved highly prolific: first, Tsukanov hit the top corner from outside the box, and shortly after, Strilchuk found the net.

Game control after the break

The second half began with a dangerous chance for Shakhtar: Zubrii threaded the ball to Smetana, who burst into the penalty area and cut it back for a finish, but the forward was just a few centimetres short of reaching the ball. In the 51st minute, the Miners made a forced change: Lomaha came on for Kanteh. It took Lomaha just five minutes to take advantage of his opportunity, increasing the lead after finishing Kaliuzhnyi’s pass. In the 62nd minute, the Citizens had arguably their best chance to reduce the deficit following a misunderstanding in front of the goal area, but Bahlai kept his side safe, turning away the attempt from Oleksandriia U19’s winger. Thereafter, the Pitmen controlled the tempo, repeatedly reaching the final third and attempting to finish their attacks with shots, but the score remained unchanged.

5-0 – Shakhtar U19 secured an away victory over Oleksandriia U19. Next Saturday, March 14, the Miners will host Metalist 1925 Kharkiv U19.
