Shakhtar hosted Obolon in the UPL round 28
The Miners entered the match as champions of Ukraine, having secured the title early. Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan named the following starting line-up: Academy graduate 18-year-old Rostyslav Bahlai made his debut in goal for the senior team, Matviienko and Nazaryna started in central defence, Azarov and Ghram operated as full-backs, Marlon Gomes, Ocheretko and Pedrinho played in midfield, Prosper and Newertton were the wingers, with Meirelles taking the centre-forward position.
Due to an air raid alert, the match started with a 45-minute delay.
Two quick goals and an almost three-hour half
From the start of the match, the newly crowned champions played freely and confidently, and managed to open the scoring quite early. In the 9th minute, Pedrinho’s through ball released Luca Meirelles on the right side of the penalty area, and he beat the goalkeeper with a finish into the far corner to make it 1-0. Just in the 14th minute, the Orange-and-Blacks doubled their lead: Newertton set up Alaa Ghram who unleashed a powerful strike from around 25 metres and placed the ball precisely into the left post – 2-0. However, in the 17th minute the match was interrupted and the pause lasted for two hours due to a series of air raid alerts. The teams returned to the pitch at 21:00 and resumed the game. Shakhtar controlled proceedings, but the tempo and intensity had clearly dropped, so there were few chances before the break. Prosper’s shot was blocked by defenders, while Newertton fired over the crossbar. Towards the end of the half, the visitors became more active, and while Bahlai reacted to a deflection by Nazaryna towards his own goal, the Kyiv side pulled one back in the 44th minute: after a free-kick delivery and a teammate’s lay-off, Chekh struck the ball, which took a deflection and flew into the left corner.
A half with chances at both ends and a goal from Shved
The start of the second half was rather slow. Bahlai comfortably dealt with a long-ranger from Tretiakov, while Nazaryna responded with a shot from outside the box that went just wide of the top corner, and Pedrinho’s effort passed only centimetres from the post. Around the middle of the half, Shakhtar coaching staff made their first changes, bringing on Isaque and Kaua Elias. Meanwhile, Obolon created a decent chance when Medynskyi delivered a cross, and Zhovtenko attempted an improvised heel flick at the near post, but Bahlai was again solid and gathered the ball confidently. In the final 10 minutes, Tsukanov, Shved and Bondar came onto the pitch. Young Tsukanov immediately combined with Isaque and went through on goal, but there was not enough space for a shot, while experienced Marian Shved converted his chance in the 90th minute: receiving a pass from Isaque on the right side of the box, the Ukrainian winger fired from a tight angle past Marchenko to set the final score.
3-1 – Shakhtar beat Obolon in a match that lasted close to four hours.
Arda Turan’s side will play their next game away against Kryvbas on Sunday, May 17. The clash at the Hirnyk Stadium in Kryvyi Rih kicks off at 13:00.
