Shakhtar newcomer Gleiker Mendoza gave his first interview as a team player
– Welcome to Shakhtar! You have signed a contract with the club, so can you share your thoughts and emotions about this?
– The truth is that I’m very happy and very excited. I thank God and all the people who made this possible. I cannot express my emotions about what is happening. Signing a contract with the biggest club in this country is a great joy for me!
– What was your first reaction when you found out that Shakhtar were interested in you? And how did the negotiations go, how quickly was everything decided?
– I was very happy when I heard that Shakhtar were interested in me. In fact, everything was very straightforward as I had planned to join the biggest club in Ukraine.
– Did you speak before the signing with head coach Arda Turan or with any of our players? If so, what did you talk about?
– I have not spoken with the coaching staff yet. I did speak with teammates Pedrinho and Arroyo, who speaks the same language as me. Honestly, they treated me very well. So for now, only with them.
– You chose the number 77. Why that number? Is it special for you?
– It is because I like the number 7. But that number was already taken, so I decided to take 77.
– How would you describe yourself as a player? What qualities do you think you can bring to Shakhtar in the upcoming season?
– I’m a fighter. I really like to go forward, always to win, to have belief, to move step by step, with God’s guidance. My best qualities are speed, strength, jumping ability, defending and shooting.
– Shakhtar are a club with a great history and serious ambitions. In the upcoming season, they will take part in the Champions League and compete for all possible trophies. What goals do you want to achieve with the team?
– The team’s goals must always be the highest – we have to reach the top in everything. And my personal goal is to do everything possible before God, to perform much better than last season and to keep moving forward step by step.
– In your previous team, you scored quite a few goals against Dynamo Kyiv, who are historically Shakhtar’s biggest rivals. How many goals are you planning to score against the main opponents in a Shakhtar jersey?
– I want to score goals against all teams, but since it is the Ukrainian Clasico, it would of course be even more special to score in that match in a Shakhtar jersey. After all, it is a national derby and it is very important.
– What does it personally mean for you to become a Shakhtar player and what would you like to say to our fans?
– I’m very happy, as I said at the beginning. I thank God and those who made this possible. And I want to tell the fans to keep supporting the team as they do now because I know they are great supporters. See you on the pitch!
