Shakhtar hosted Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League league phase round 4

Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan selected the following starting line-up for this game: Riznyk took his place between the sticks, Matviienko and Bondar played in central defence, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique appeared as fullbacks, Nazaryna, Ocheretko and Marlon Gomes operated in midfield, Mendoza and Alisson were the wingers, with Kaua Elias in the centre-forward role.

A balanced first half ends goalless

From the opening minutes, both sides looked to take control of midfield and build their attacks through combinations. However, most of the attacking moves came from quick transitions. The first shot of the match came from Pedro Henrique, who tried his luck from distance, but the ball went straight into the visiting goalkeeper’s hands. At the other end, Matviienko did well to block Araújo’s attempt from inside the penalty area. Alisson had a promising opportunity when he carried the ball in from the right flank into the penalty area, but was unable to get a shot away. On another occasion, the Brazilian winger took the ball past the goalkeeper but found himself at too tight an angle to shoot. The Miners created the best chance of the half just before the break, when Kaua Elias tried to turn Nazaryna’s cross from the right flank into the net at the far post, but failed to get properly set and missed the target from barely two metres out.

A single goal settled it

The second half began with a chance for the home side. Suárez picked out Doumbia with a pass from the left side of the goal area, and the forward struck first time, but the ball went centimetres wide of the far post. The Orange-and-Blacks responded with a chance of their own, when Mendoza sent a low cross in from the flank and Kaua Elias tried to turn and shoot, but the ball was blocked by Sporting defenders. However, it was the Portuguese side who broke the deadlock: in the 59th minute, they launched a positional attack through the middle, and Doumbia threw himself at the ball from the centre of the penalty area to turn it into the net. The visitors could have doubled their lead soon after. First, Suárez failed to make contact with a header from inside the six-yard box, then Riznyk produced an incredible save on the line to keep out Quaresma’s effort. The Pitmen had a chance to equalise quickly when Marlon Gomes attempted an acrobatic overhead kick from a cross delivered from the right, but his spectacular effort missed the target. In the 68th minute, Arda Turan made his first substitutions, bringing on Isaque and Newertton. The Miners pushed forward in numbers and, a few minutes later, had a potential penalty appeal. Vinicius Tobias knocked the ball past Araujo inside the penalty area and was brought down by his opponent, but the referee waved play on in a controversial incident. This did nothing to dampen the home side’s attacking intent. Marlon Gomes then burst through the middle and sent a low shot from the edge of the penalty arc, but the goalkeeper gathered the ball at the second attempt. Alisson tried his luck with a long-range free kick, aiming for the bottom left corner, but Rui Silva was alert once again. Alisson came close again when he cut inside from the right flank and unleashed a powerful shot towards the near post – the ball clipped the post and went out of play. Shakhtar’s coaching staff bolstered the attack by bringing on Traore, Lucas and Meirelles. Kaua Elias then created a chance of his own, but his powerful long-ranger went narrowly wide of the right post. And in stoppage time, the Orange-and-Blacks missed a fantastic opportunity: Ocheretko delivered an excellent cross to the left side of the goal area, where Newertton had a free header, but the goalkeeper once again came to the Portuguese side’s rescue. 0-1 – Shakhtar suffered a narrow defeat to Sporting CP.

The Miners will play their next UEFA Champions League match on November 25, when they host Turkish side Fenerbahçe. The game at Stamford Bridge in London is set to kick off at 22:00 Kyiv time.
