Shakhtar youth team faced their Metalurh counterparts in the U19 National League round 13
Shakhtar U19 head coach Maksym Malyshev selected the following starting line-up for the match against Metalurh U19: Stepanov was in goal, Nyzhnyk and Nevmerzhytskyi played at full-back, Onishchuk and Harbar formed the centre-back pairing, Kots, Byrladianu and Gul operated in midfield, Safonov and Bida were deployed as wingers, with Haponenko leading the line.
Cautious play and an unfortunate own goal by Onishchuk
Neither side forced the pace, instead sizing each other up and battling for possession. The Miners were slightly more active and ventured into the opposition's final third more frequently. Yet the first dangerous chance came at Stepanov's end. Riabokon took a set piece that produced the breakthrough: Onishchuk's attempt took a deflection and ended up in the back of the net. The Orange-and-Blacks could have restored parity in the 27th minute when Nyzhnyk carried the ball down the flank and picked out Koman at the far post, but he failed to hit the target. The Donetsk side's next gilt-edged chance came towards the end of the half. Onishchuk played a long ball forward from deep, Koman laid it off first time into Bidi's path, and he went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but sent his effort wide.
From a comeback to victory
At half-time, Shakhtar U19 made a double substitution, with Voloshko and Kuriachyi coming on for Byrladianu and Haponenko. The Pitmen immediately took control of possession and began combining in the opposition half. They soon created a gilt-edged chance: Safonov split the opposition defence with a through ball to Kuriachyi, who played it into the finishing area for Hul – but he failed to hit the target. Eventually, the Miners drew level in the 60th minute. Harbar's through ball sent Koman through on goal, and he beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-1. The Orange-and-Blacks needed just three minutes to turn the game around and take the lead: Voloshko picked out Koman with a lofted pass, and he broke into the penalty area before laying the ball off for Kuriachyi to finish – 1-2. The Orange-and-Blacks continued to put pressure on their opponents' goal. Bida pressed Riabchenko, won possession and sent the ball into the net to make it 1-3. Maksym Malyshev's side controlled the tempo for the remainder of the match and saw out the game to a deserved conclusion.
