Shakhtar hosted Dynamo in the UPL round 12 at the Arena Lviv
The Orange-and-Blacks’ head coach Arda Turan named the following starting line-up for the second Ukrainian Clasico of the season: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Matviienko and Bondar played at centre-back, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique were at full-back, Nazaryna, Marlon Gomes and Ocheretko operated in midfield, with Alisson, Mendoza and Traore forming the attacking trio.
Before the match, Ukraine’s national anthem was performed by war veterans Oleksandr Romenskyi and Yurii Malenok, while the symbolic kick-off was taken by Piliachcho – a representative of the Miners’ ultras, a heroic defender of Ukraine and an officer of the Separate Special Operations Detachment Tuman of the 1st Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine. Piliachcho took up arms to defend Ukraine in the first days of the full-scale invasion. He took part in the battles for Kyiv and Bakhmut, carried out combat missions in the Zaporizhzhia, Toretsk and Dobropillia directions, as well as near Kreminna. For his courage, he has received the For Bravery and Cross of the Brave awards, as well as the For the Defence of Ukraine presidential award.
An intense first half with chances at both ends, but no goals
From the start of the match, the Miners took control of possession and settled in the opposition half, looking to break through Dynamo’s compact defence with combination play and crosses from the flanks. The first chance of the match came from a corner, when the ball fell to Mendoza, but the Venezuelan fired over the crossbar from the left side of the penalty area. Midway through the half, the visitors also created an opportunity from a corner: Thiaré went for a header, but Marlon Gomes got between the ball and the goal. The teams continued to exchange dangerous attacks, this time from open play. First, Voloshyn intercepted the ball, broke through one-on-one and shot towards the right corner, but Riznyk reacted and turned the ball behind for a corner. Then, on the counter-attack, Alisson controlled an excellent through ball and found himself in front of the goalkeeper, but Bushchan saved his shot. Alisson created the best chance of the half just seconds before the break. Receiving the ball to the right of centre, he unexpectedly struck from distance towards the near post – the keeper was beaten, but Dynamo were saved by the post.
A strong performance with 10 men and a draw at full-time
The teams started the second half on the front foot again, but an incident then occurred that shaped the remainder of the match. Dubinchak and Vinicius Tobias both committed fouls in the penalty area. The Dynamo player was shown a yellow card, while the Shakhtar footballer was sent off for unsporting behaviour following a VAR review, and the Miners were down to 10 men from the 53rd minute as a result. Arda Turan was forced to make a substitution, bringing Ghram on in defence. The hosts quickly reorganised, and although they conceded possession to their opponents, they did not retreat towards their own goal and continued to look for opportunities to counter-attack. During one such attack, Ocheretko’s long-ranger struck a Dynamo defender on the head. The Donetsk coaching staff freshened up the forward line by bringing on Newertton and Meirelles, followed a little later by Lucas. Meanwhile, the visitors stepped up their attacking efforts, and Riznyk came to the Orange-and-Blacks’ rescue, reacting to a deflection following Dubinchak’s long-range shot. Keasse Bah then had two dangerous efforts: first, he shot just wide of the right post, then sent the ball over the bar. In the closing minutes of normal time, the teams exchanged another couple of good chances. Thiaré headed over the crossbar from a corner, while Newertton broke into the Dynamo penalty area down the left but hit Bushchan. 0-0 – Shakhtar and Dynamo share the points in the league match.
Club football is taking a break for the international fixtures. Arda Turan’s side will play their next game on November 20. Shakhtar will host Livyi Bereh in the UPL round 13. The clash at the Arena Lviv kicks off at 18:00.
