Shakhtar women’s team hosted Seasters in Shchaslyve in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16

Shakhtar head coach Roman Zaiev named the following starting XI for the cup tie against Seasters: Ustinova took her place between the sticks, Kotovets, Balatska, Henyk and Sikorska formed the defence, Veherych, Holovach, Myronenko and Mokhnach played in midfield, while Druzhchenko and Marchenko led the attack.

A dynamic game with three goals

The opponents began the match with an even battle for the initiative and created little danger in front of goal. Shakhtar responded to Seasters’ attacks with a shot from a tight angle by Holovach, which Maliborska did well to save, turning the ball behind for a corner. The next chance resulted in a goal: following the corner and a subsequent scramble in the goal area, Veherych found herself in a good position and directed the ball into the net with a first-time finish, making it 1-0. Soon afterwards, Mokhnach created a chance to double the lead, but the attacking players failed to get on the end of her dangerous cross. The Odesa outfit had their first real opportunity after Ptytsyna’s powerful long-range effort – Ustinova was there to save. Seasters’ next attack resulted in a goal: Tkachuk carried the ball forward at pace, outstripped her opponents, went one-on-one with Ustinova and found the net. It took the visitors just two minutes to take the lead: Pantsulaia skilfully beat Henyk and Ustinova in the six-yard box before playing the ball across for Kravets to finish.

A battle until the final whistle

The second half started with a dangerous free-kick from Seasters near the centre circle, but Osipian’s effort went over the bar. The Odesa side looked to establish possession straight away and threaten Ustinova’s goal more frequently, while the Orange-and-Blacks focused on counter-attacking. In the 58th minute, Holovach had a chance after cutting in from the flank into a good position, but her effort went over the bar. Soon afterwards, the match was interrupted for 20 minutes by an air raid alert in Shchaslyve. After play resumed, Seasters continued to take the initiative. Colmenares could have extended the lead after receiving a spectacular through ball from Kalinina, but her effort went just centimetres wide of the post. The teams exchanged attacks until the final whistle, but the score remained unchanged.

1-2 – Shakhtar women’s team lost to Seasters in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16 and are eliminated from the tournament.
