Shakhtar faced Italian side Inter away on the UEFA Champions League league phase MD3

Head coach of the Miners Arda Turan picked the following starting line-up for this match: Riznyk took his place in goal, Matviienko and Bondar started in central defence, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique played at full-back, Ocheretko, Pedrinho and Marlon Gomes operated in midfield, Mendoza and Alisson were deployed on the wings, with Kaua Elias up front.

The first half was evenly contested and goalless

The match began with the hosts applying pressure, creating several dangerous attacks in the opening minutes: Thuram’s effort from the left side was saved by Riznyk, while Çalhanoğlu fired wide from distance. The Orange-and-Blacks responded with attacks of their own, but the goalkeeper denied Pedrinho’s effort, while Ocheretko shot over the crossbar. Riznyk came to Shakhtar’s rescue once again, saving Bonny’s low effort towards the bottom corner. In the 32nd minute, Shakhtar were forced into a substitution as Pedrinho picked up an injury and was replaced by Nazaryna. The Ukrainian champions finished the half on the front foot, creating two chances from set pieces. First, Bondar met a corner with a header, but Josep produced a fine save to keep the hosts in the game. Then, Ocheretko met a cross from a right corner first time at the far post, but failed to hit the target.

Shakhtar had a numerical advantage but conceded on the counter-attack

The second half began with Shakhtar enjoying possession, a long-range effort from Vinicius Tobias (wide of the post) and a superb rainbow flick from Alisson. As the half approached its midpoint, Inter took control and Thuram threatened with a shot towards the right corner, but Riznyk produced an excellent save. In the 68th minute, home defender Bastoni was shown a second yellow card and sent off for striking Ocheretko in the face. The Miners immediately went on the attack, and Arda Turan freshened things up with a triple substitution, bringing on Isaque, Newertton and Traore. However, caught up in their attacking efforts, the visitors were hit on the counter-attack in the 77th minute: Mkhitaryan played a through ball from deep to send Carlos Augusto through on goal, and he finished underneath the goalkeeper to open the scoring. Bruninho came on in the 83rd minute, making his Champions League debut. In the closing stages, the Orange-and-Blacks launched an all-out assault on the Italian side’s goal and had several chances to equalise. Newertton shot towards the left corner, but Josep kept it out. After a corner, Matviienko sent a header goalwards, but once again the goalkeeper came to the hosts’ rescue, stopping the ball on the goal line. 0-1 – Shakhtar suffer a frustrating defeat to Inter.

Arda Turan’s side will play their next UEFA Champions League match on November 3, when they host Portuguese side Sporting CP in London. The game will take place at Stamford Bridge at 18:45 local time (19:45 Kyiv time). Ticket packages for home Champions League fixtures are on sale.
