Comment from Shakhtar U21 head coach Oleksii Bielik after the win over Zorya U21
– We have a positive result, but we are not satisfied with the team’s style of play. We can be happy with the result, but we have problems that we are looking to solve at the moment. Perhaps we haven’t been able to do so because we don’t have enough time for a full training cycle. So to say that we’re happy with the performance would mean putting the problem off until later, and it would inevitably come back to haunt us sooner or later. Of course, as a coach, I’m responsible for this and will defend my players to the very end. However, they also need to understand that, given the number of mistakes we make during matches, such statements from me could sound like populism. They must also take responsibility, analyse their own performances and improve. I’m not talking only about goalkeeping errors, which are always noticeable, but also those made by outfield players. In particular, I have concerns about our attacking unit, which fails to provide support at certain moments and struggle to hold up the ball when we’re defending. We cannot afford to make mistakes in the simple things and must face reality: football is a game in which there are rivels who give everything and carry out their tasks effectively. If a footballer wants to play at senior level for a big club in the future, he cannot afford to make mistakes in basic match situations. Attacking players must get away from their markers and make runs in behind the opposition defence, while defenders must be able to execute diagonal passes accurately. In addition, we must work on more complex aspects of the game that will put our opponents under pressure. If we are unable to do that, we will remain a mediocre team.
I’d also like to point out that, in my opinion, there isn’t enough competition among the players at the Academy, and we need to change our development strategy. There should be competition for every position between two quality players. It’s understandable that youth football is fast-moving, but unfortunately, that level of competition is currently lacking. It shouldn’t be just the coach motivating a footballer to improve, but also his direct competitor. Without that, a player may become complacent in certain areas and take his professional responsibilities on the pitch less seriously. Most importantly, his development slows down. I want this issue to be given attention.
