Shakhtar faced their Zorya counterparts in the UPL-2 round 10 in Kyiv

Shakhtar U21 head coach Oleksii Bielik named the following starting line-up for the match against Zorya U21: Bahlai took his place between the sticks, Kaliuzhnyi, Kostiuk, Harabazhii and Reshetnikov were in defence, Davydenko, Tiutiunov and Smetana operated in midfield, Strilchuk and Sheleketa played on the wings, with Harmash leading the line as centre-forward.

Disciplined performance

The Orange-and-Blacks took control of possession from the outset and looked for ways to get at Kosivskyi’s goal, but without creating any significant danger. The Luhansk side, meanwhile, focused on waiting for their chance to counter after winning possession, but the Miners’ defenders blocked their attempts. The first real chance in front of the visitors’ goal came when Smetana struck a powerful free-kick, which proved successful, making it 1-0. Soon afterwards, Smetana threatened again with a volley, but this time Kosivskyi made the save to prevent a goal. In the 35th minute, the home side were awarded a spot-kick after a foul on Harmash in the penalty area. However, they failed to take advantage of the opportunity, with Tiutiunov hitting the crossbar. Until the end of the first half, Shakhtar U21 controlled the tempo of the game and did not allow their opponents to threaten Bahlai’s goal.

An eventful second half with three goals

At half-time, Shakhtar head coach Oleksii Bielik made a double substitution, bringing on Petruk and Kanteh to strengthen the attack. Zorya U21 started the second half somewhat more actively, threatening mainly with shots from distance, which Bahlai dealt with comfortably. However, in the next passage of play, the Shakhtar U21 goalkeeper made a fatal error that allowed Solomakha to equalise. It did not take the Miners long to regain the lead. Tiutiunov split Zorya’s defence with a pass to Smetana, who advanced towards the goalkeeper before squaring the ball for Petruk to shoot home and make it 2-1. The home side then enjoyed a clear territorial advantage, eventually turning it into another goal when Kanteh converted a penalty awarded for handball by a Zorya U21 defender inside the penalty area.

3-1 – the Orange-and-Blacks claimed victory and will welcome the capital-based Obolon U21 to Lviv next Thursday, October 29.
