Shakhtar hosted Dynamo in the Ukrainian Cup last 16 in Lviv

Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan named the following starting line-up for the first Ukrainian Clasico of the season: Riznyk took the place between the sticks, Matviienko and Bondar played at centre-back, Vinicius Tobias and Pedro Henrique were at full-back, Nazaryna, Marlon Gomes and Ocheretko operated in midfield, with Alisson, Mendoza and Kaua Elias forming the attacking trio.

The ceremonial kick-off was taken by volunteer and community activist Vladyslav Samusenko. He was born in Donetsk and was left without parental care as an infant. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Vladyslav has been evacuating people from the most dangerous areas of the Donetsk region, transporting the wounded and the dead, and helping military personnel, displaced people and families requiring support.

A half with a sending-off and Mendoza’s goal

The teams started the match at a very high tempo, but their play was somewhat chaotic. In the opening stages, neither side managed to establish control of the ball or build up combinations, with dangerous situations arising from mistakes under pressure. Gradually, the Orange-and-Blacks took the initiative. Bushchan had to make a save from a long-range effort by Marlon Gomes before Ocheretko also fired over the crossbar from outside the penalty area. Then, in the 29th minute, one of the key moments of the match occurred: Dynamo defender Taras Mykhavko struck Ocheretko in the face inside the opposition box and was shown a straight red card by the referee. After that, the Miners enjoyed almost complete dominance of possession and mounted a sustained series of attacks on the visitors’ goal. Bushchan tipped Alisson’s free-kick out from under the crossbar, then turned Nazaryna’s powerful effort behind for a corner. But it was from that very corner, in the 43rd minute, that the goal came: following Nazaryna’s delivery, Bushchan came out poorly to deal with the ball, Gleiker Mendoza beat the defenders in the aerial challenge and steered it low into the net to make it 1-0. In stoppage time, the hosts could have extended their lead when the Kyiv goalkeeper parried Pedro Henrique’s long-ranger straight back into play, Marlon Gomes followed up with a shot, but Bushchan saved again.

Shakhtar’s dominance rewarded with goals from Isaque and Alisson

The second half also began with Shakhtar enjoying possession and pushing forward. Bushchan kept out Pedro Henrique’s powerful low cross-shot from distance, aimed towards the bottom right corner, while Mendoza produced one of his trademark moves, cutting inside from the left side of the penalty area before unleashing a diagonal effort that narrowly missed the far top corner, flashing just wide of the post. As time went on, the game became increasingly tense, with plenty of physical challenges, fouls and arguments with the referee. In the 63rd minute, Arda Turan made his first substitutions, bringing on Isaque and Traore. The Miners continued to prise open Dynamo’s defence with their combinations, and in the 74th minute, another move paid off. Alisson received the ball on the right flank, drove towards the byline and delivered a cross to the edge of the six-yard box, Isaque Silva arrived from deep and powered a header into the net to make it 2-0. Immediately afterwards, the Orange-and-Blacks made a further double substitution, with Azarov and Newertton coming on. Shakhtar continued to press forward and, in the 87th minute, made the scoreline emphatic: a move that began on the left flank was worked through several passes into the centre of the penalty area, where Isaque set up Alisson for a shot, with the Brazilian coolly beating the goalkeeper. The visitors finished the match with nine men following Tiaré’s dismissal, but by then the result was beyond doubt.

3-0 – Shakhtar beat Dynamo convincingly to reach the Ukrainian Cup quarter-finals.

Next Friday, October 30, Arda Turan’s side will host Obolon in the UPL round 11. The game at the Arena Lviv kicks off at 18:00.

The UEFA Champions League league phase MD4 fixture between Shakhtar and Sporting CP will take place next Tuesday, November 3. The game will be played at Stamford Bridge in London, with kickoff scheduled for 18:45 local time (19:45 Kyiv time).
