Shakhtar hosted Obolon in the UPL round 11 at the Arena Lviv

Following Tuesday’s Cup victory over Dynamo (3-0), Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan made several changes to the starting line-up: Riznyk remained in goal, Karavaiev, Bondar, Ghram and Azarov formed the defensive line, Kryskiv, Ocheretko and Isaque operated in midfield, Newertton and Bruninho were deployed on the wings, with Traore leading the line.

The ceremonial kick-off was taken by Kyrylo Vyshniakov, call sign Vyshnia, a serviceman in the motorised infantry battalion of the 65th Separate Mechanised Brigade Velykyi Luh. He joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2020 and has been taking part in combat operations since the first days of the full-scale invasion. The defender spent hundreds of days on the front line in the Orikhiv sector. On October 20, Kyrylo and his brothers-in-arms left their frontline positions after completing an extremely challenging 324-day defensive operation in the Zaporizhzhia region. Thanks to the resilience of the soldiers, the advance of the occupying forces was halted and control was maintained over several settlements near the front line. All the defenders successfully completed their combat mission and returned alive.

Total domination and chances for Traore, but no goals before the break

The Orange-and-Blacks attacked the visitors’ goal almost relentlessly from the start and, despite their opponents’ compact defensive setup, created several goalscoring opportunities in the opening stages. In the 11th minute, following a cross from the left, Traore sent a dangerous header just centimetres over the crossbar. Five minutes later, the Burkinabè forward had a great chance when he broke through one-on-one and shot past the goalkeeper, only to hit the crossbar. Ghram and Ocheretko followed with efforts from long and medium range, but neither found the target. The siege of the Kyiv side’s penalty area continued, and the lively Traore came within a whisker of turning home Bruninho’s cross from the right. Despite their considerable dominance, the teams went into half-time with the score still goalless.

Alisson’s brace secured victory

The second half also began with a chance for the Miners. Newertton’s free-kick cleared the wall, but Barantsov did well to tip the ball away from just under the left post. Obolon responded with a chance of their own on the counter-attack, as Slobodian fired over the crossbar from the centre of the penalty area. Just after the hour mark, Arda Turan made his first substitutions, bringing on Vinicius Tobias, Alisson and Meirelles. The Orange-and-Blacks pushed forward with renewed energy and immediately threatened to score: Ghram delivered a cross into the penalty area and Traore met it with a header, but the goalkeeper once again came to the visitors’ rescue. In the next attack, it was the post that saved the Brewers, denying Vinicius Tobias from the edge of the penalty area. Shakhtar finally broke down Obolon’s defence in the 70th minute: Alisson, who had made an immediate impact after coming on and was constantly creating danger, sent a delicate, looping effort from the right side of the penalty area into the far top corner to make it 1-0. The Donetsk side eased off the attacking pressure somewhat after that, but remained in control of proceedings. The home side’s coaching staff introduced two more fresh players, Marlon Gomes and Mendoza. Alisson then created another chance for himself: with a single feint, he beat two opponents inside the penalty area, but Barantsov saved his shot. However, the newly capped Brazil international was unstoppable today and completed his brace in the 85th minute. Alisson received the ball at the right corner of the penalty area, cut inside with his trademark move and fired a powerful shot inside the near post to make it 2-0. In the closing stages, the Kyiv side tried to score at least a consolation goal, but Riznyk denied Medynskyi, tipping his powerful effort away from under the crossbar.

2-0 – Shakhtar defeat Obolon in the UPL game. Arda Turan’s side now turn their attention back to European competition.

Next Tuesday, November 3, the UEFA Champions League league phase round 4 match between Shakhtar and Sporting CP will take place. The game at Stamford Bridge in London is set to kick off at 17:45 local time (19:45 Kyiv time).
