Shakhtar faced PSV away in the first round of the UEFA Youth League league phase
The Miners are making their 11th appearance in Europe’s most prestigious youth tournament. The Pitmen’s squad is made up of players from Shakhtar U21 and U19 and are led by Oleksii Bielik and his coaching staff.
A quick goal from the opponents and chances to level before the break
The hosts started the game more actively and took the lead in the 10th minute: Liam van Nistelrooij met his teammate’s cross from the left at the far post. The Orange-and-Blacks immediately took control and created several dangerous attacks: Kaliuzhnyi’s long ranger was saved by the goalkeeper, Zubrii broke into the box down the left but saw his effort blocked, while Verhun sent a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Tverdokhlib failed to make contact with it as he went to ground. The Eindhoven side, meanwhile, threatened Bahlai’s goal several times, but the Pitmen’s goalkeeper was reliable, notably making an impressive save from van Nistelrooij’s header. As the end of the first half approached, the Miners increased the pressure and had a great chance in the final minutes: Balakai beat his opponents on the left and sent the ball into the centre of the box, where Tiutiunov fired over the bar first time.
Dominance and plenty of chances, but no goals
The second half began with Shakhtar on the attack. Oleksandr Chornenkyi, who came on at half-time, broke into the box through the middle, but his effort went over the bar. Kostiuk then had two chances in quick succession: Kuijsten tipped his powerful long-range effort over for a corner, and after the corner was taken, Yehor headed towards goal – another save from the goalkeeper, followed by Tiutiunov’s offside follow-up. Oleksii Bielik’s side continued to push forward and look for opportunities, including through their high press. There were several promising attacks when they were just missing the final pass or finish. In the 80th minute, Tiutiunov had a good chance but fired over from the right side of the box. The final chance came in the closing seconds following a corner from the left, when Shukalovych headed towards goal, but the goalkeeper dealt with the effort. 0-1 – Shakhtar youth team lost to their PSV counterparts.
Shakhtar U19’s next UEFA Youth League match will take place on October 14, when Oleksii Bielik’s side host AEK U19 at the Kingsmeadow Stadium in London. Kickoff is at 14:00 Kyiv time.
