Shakhtar faced Karpaty away in the Ukrainian Premier League MD5 standout fixture
Shakhtar head coach Arda Turan made several changes to the starting line-up compared with the previous match: Riznyk played in goal, Matviienko and Bondar were at centre-back, Karavaiev and Pedro Henrique operated at full-back, Nazaryna, Ocheretko and Marlon Gomes featured in midfield, Newertton and Alisson started on the wings, with Meirelles as the centre-forward.
An even game and goals exchanged before the break
Both teams started the match intensely but cautiously, feeling each other out in the opening stages. Alisson was the first to look to create danger: the Brazilian burst down the right flank, but his cross was blocked by Babohlo. The winger then picked out Karavaiev with a pass, but the latter missed the target from a tight angle. The hosts, however, made the most of their chance and took the lead in the 12th minute: the ball became stuck in the Pitmen’s penalty area, Riznyk saved two shots in quick succession, but Rusyn beat the goalkeeper with his third attempt. The Miners immediately took control of the game and, in the 25th minute, finally managed to break through their opponents’ compact pressing and equalise: Alisson split the Lviv outfit’s defence with a pass through the middle, Marlon Gomes’ shot was parried by the goalkeeper, and Luca Meirelles was first to the rebound – 1-1. The Orange-and-Blacks were the more active side for the rest of the half and came closer to scoring a second: Alisson fired just wide of the post from under a defender, while Ocheretko failed to make proper contact with the ball after a teammate’s lay-off.

The second half started at a slower pace, although the Pitmen looked more dangerous in attack. Newertton came close to curling the ball into the far top corner with his signature effort from the left corner of the penalty area, while Alisson and Marlon Gomes then set up Ocheretko, but the Ukrainian’s powerful strike was parried by Marchenko. Midway through the half, Arda Turan made his first substitutions, bringing on Isaque, Mendoza and Kaua Elias. And in the 67th minute, Shakhtar managed to score a second goal: following a turnover in the middle of the pitch, Isaque played a superb through ball to send Alisson clear, with the Brazilian calmly rounding the goalkeeper – 1-2. The goalscorer was soon replaced by Lucas. The hosts tried to turn the game around, but the Miners defended calmly and solidly, barely allowing their opponents to threaten Riznyk’s goal. Kryskiv came on in stoppage time, but Karpaty’s late onslaught, with numerous crosses into the penalty area, failed to produce an equaliser.
