Before the match
After two rounds, Shakhtar and Dinamo have 3 points each, while City are topping the group with 6 points. As of today, it is the Croats who are the most obvious rivals of the Miners in terms of advancing from the group, with the clubs considering 2 head-to-head meetings in a row as the key to further competition in the tournament.
On Friday, Shakhtar thrashed Kolos 6-0 and immediately switched to the Champions League. On Sunday, Luis Castro’s men paid attention to tactics and shots, also holding a small-sided game. Ismaily still trains individually after not appearing in the recent league game.
On the morning of October 21, the Miners will hold an open training session in Sviatoshyno, flying to Kharkiv in the afternoon, where the traditional pre-match press conference of Luis Castro will begin at 19:00. Together with the manager, midfielder Taras Stepanenko will answer questions from reporters.
Tickets for the match between Shakhtar and Dinamo Zagreb can be purchased at the OSK Metalist ticket office and online, at shakhtar.com. We want to point out that the match in Kharkiv will not take place late – it starts in the early Champions League kick-off slot (19:55).
In the last 2 seasons, Dinamo Zagreb have been the Champions of Croatia. The club is leading these days, going 2 points clear of Hajduk Split, having lost to the latter 0-1 away on August 31 though. The Blues’ current winning streak in the domestic Championship comprises 3 matches.
This is Dinamo’s 7th Champions League group stage campaign. The previous participation dates back to the 2016/17 season when the Croats got into the quartet including Juventus, Seville, and Lyon, claiming the bottom spot (0 points). But in the last year’s Europa League campaign, the Zagreb side won by a big margin and knocked the Czech Viktoria off the Round of 32, finishing in the following round vs Benfica.
Dinamo are a fairly flexible team tactically. In the majority of the league games, Nenad Bjelica uses a formation involving 4 defenders, but in the Champions League he relies on the formation featuring 3 central defenders. It happened so vs Atalanta and Manchester City. At the same time, the Zagreb outfit played their recent league games using the formations of 4-3-1-2 and 4-1-4-1. On Friday, against Gorica, a few major players got some rest in contrast to the top scorer Mislav Orsic who has scored a hat-trick again.
All in all, in 10 European club cup games against the opponents from Ukraine, the Croats haven’t had a single victory: 2 draws and 8 defeats.
The clubs have had two encounters in the UCL third qualifying round 2008/09. First, Shakhtar won in Donetsk with a score of 2-0 (Srna converted a free-kick in the opening stages, with Jadson doubling the lead in the 31st minute), extending their success in the return leg at the Stadion Maksimir – 3-1 win with the goals netted by Brazilians (Adriano, Brandao, and Willian). There is a more recent game, but it was a friendly eighteen months ago in Turkey.
