Shakhtar scored 10 points in 4 opening rounds and shares the 1st place in the UPL standings. After a draw with another Kharkiv representative Metalist 1925 (0:0), Igor Jovicevic's team won 3 times over Kryvbas (1:0), Rukh (1:0) and Chornomorets (2:1). Donetsk natives have also successfully started the euro-season: in 2 matches of the Champions League group stage they defeated Leipzig on the road (4:1) and played a draw with Celtic (1:1).
After the game with the Scots, there was a two-week break in club football. Miners held it in Warsaw: they trained and played a test match with the Polish Radomyak. At the same time, 13 Shakhtar members played for the national and youth national teams of Ukraine, and arrived at the club's location only on the eve of the match with Kharkiv residents.
Metalist returned to the UPL for the first time since 2016, having gone through the disbandment of the club, revival at the amateur level, victory in the Second Division and leadership in the First League. Kharkiv natives started the new season with a victory over Rukh (2:1), played a draw with Ingulets (1:1), beat Alexandria (3:1), and were defeated for the first time in last tour losing to Kolos (0:1).
The Metalist squad changed significantly this summer, as the head coach Alexander Kucher and a number of leading football players left the club. Currently, the team is headed by 52-year-old Oleg Ratiy. The leaders of the team are experienced goalkeeper and captain Alexander Rybka, midfielder Vyacheslav Tankovskyi (both played for Shakhtar at different times) and forward Maxim Priadun, who scored 2 winning goals for Kharkiv residents this season.
Shakhtar and Metalist held 38 common matches in the Ukrainian Championship. The Orange-blacks have 26 victories, 10 meetings ended in draws and another 2 in favor of Kharkiv residents. In terms of overall goal difference, the Donetsk team is the leading one: 91–28. The greatest result was recorded in the 2000/01 season with Miners having beaten their opponent on their own field with a score of 8:0.
Within the UPL, the teams last played on April 1, 2016 in Lviv. The rivals quickly exchanged goals made by Tyson and Kornev, but then only the Miners scored. Ismaili and Facundo Ferreira made it to a goal before the break, Tyson scored twice in the second half, and Marlos, Eduardo and Bernard made the final score. 8:1 - a convincing victory for Donetsk.
Metalist – Shakhtar match will be served by a team of referees headed by Igor Paschal. Assistants – Semen Shlonchak and Oleksandr Korniyko.
