Match build-up

Shakhtar began their new UPL campaign a week ago with a victory over top-flight newcomers Epicentr (1-0). The only goal in that match was scored by Brazilian forward Kaua Elias. In addition, Arda Turan’s team are continuing their UEFA Europa League journey: the Miners have already passed two qualifying rounds and played the first leg of the third qualifying round against Panathinaikos in Athens this week (0-0). Next Thursday, the Orange-and-Blacks will host the Greek side in Kraków, Poland, for the return leg.

Shakhtar approach the meeting with Karpaty not only amid an extremely busy match schedule but also with attacking options limited: Burkinabe forward Lassina Traoré is out through injury, Eguinaldo picked up a knock in Greece and Kevin remains in recovery.

Opponents

Karpaty, who battled until the very end of last season for a European competition place but ultimately finished sixth in the UPL table, prepared thoroughly for the new campaign. During their training camp, Vladyslav Lupashko’s side played a series of friendlies against Wolfsberger (3-3), Győr (1-2), Al-Sharjah (1-1) and Leicester (1-2). The summer also saw targeted squad reinforcement: experienced goalkeepers Roman Mysak and Andrii Klishchuk joined as free agents, winger Paulo Vitor arrived on loan from Portimonense, forward Yaroslav Karabin transferred from Rukh and the club secured the permanent signings of Brazilians Jean Pedroso and Bruninho.

The 2025/26 UPL start was not ideal for the Lviv side: they suffered a home defeat to Polissia (0-2) in their opening match, conceding both goals before the break.

Previous meeting

On March 11, the teams met in a UPL match at the Ukraina Stadium in Lviv. In the first half, the Miners created several dangerous chances that could have been finished by Eguinaldo, Azarov, Kevin and Shved, but they were unable to convert any. The second half was marked by the debut of Brazilian Alisson for the Pitmen and goal-scoring opportunities for Bondarenko, yet the match ended in a goalless draw – 0-0.
