History and path to the Conference League

Breiðablik FC, founded in 1950 in Kópavogur, is one of Iceland’s leading clubs of recent decades. The team have become the champions of Iceland three times (2010, 2022, 2024), won the Icelandic Cup (2009), the League Cup three times (2013, 2015, 2024) and the Icelandic Super Cup twice (2023, 2025). Breiðablik were the first Icelandic club to reach the main phase of a European competition – in the 2023/24 season, the Blikar played in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage.

This European campaign, Breiðablik started in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, where they beat Albanian side Egnatia (0-1, 5-0) before losing to Polish outfit Lech (1-7, 0-1). In the UEFA Europa League qualifiers, the Icelanders were eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Zrinjski (1-1, 1-2), but in the Conference League qualifying play-off round, they twice defeated San Marino’s Virtus (2-1, 3-1) to reach the league phase of the tournament.

2025/26 performances

In the 2025 Icelandic Championship, which ended in late October, Breiðablik finished 4th, earning 42 points from 27 matches (goal difference: 46-42). Thus, the team failed to qualify for European competitions next season. In the UEFA Europa Conference League league phase, the Icelanders began with an away defeat to Switzerland’s Lausanne (0-3), and in the second round drew at home with Finland’s KuPS (0-0). They currently sit 30th in the overall league table with 1 point.

Squad and leaders

Breiðablik’s head coach is 42-year-old Ólafur Ingi Skúlason, who took charge of the team in October 2025 after previously working with the Iceland youth national teams. The Blikar’s captain is experienced central midfielder Höskuldur Gunnlaugsson, a homegrown player who has made 336 appearances for the senior side. The team’s most prolific players in this season’s Icelandic Championship and European competitions are Danish forward Tobias Thomsen (13 goals and 2 assists) and Icelandic midfielder Gísli Eyjólfsson (11 goals and 2 assists). According to Transfermarkt, the club’s most valuable player is midfielder Anton Logi Lúdvíksson (estimated value is EUR 450,000)

Stadium

Breiðablik’s home ground is the Kópavogsvöllur Stadium, located in Kópavogur. It has a capacity of around 5,500 and features an artificial pitch. However, the team host their European opponents at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium in Reykjavík.

Head-to-head record

Shakhtar and Breiðablik have never faced each other before. The Miners will play against Icelandic team for the first time in official competitions, while Breiðablik met Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk in the 2023/24 Europa Conference League, losing both matches (0-1, 0-4).
