History and path to the Conference League

Legia, founded in 1916 in Warsaw, is the most successful football club in Poland. The team remain the country’s record holders for league titles (15) and national Cup wins (22). In addition, the Militarians have lifted the Polish Super Cup six times and the League Cup once. In the 2024/25 season, the Green-and-Whites reached the UEFA Conference League quarter-finals and finished fifth in the Ekstraklasa, but qualified for European competition as the Polish Cup winners.

2025/26 performances

In the current campaign, Legia began in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, where they overcame Kazakh Aktobe (1-0, 1-0) and Czech Baník (2-2, 2-1), but could not get past Cypriot AEK (1-4, 2-1). In the UEFA Conference League play-off round, the Warsaw team defeated Scottish side Hibernian after extra time (2-1, 3-3) to reach the league phase. The Legionaries were beaten at home by Türkiye’s Samsunspor in round 1 (0-1). Legia have 15 points from 11 matches in the Polish league (goal difference: 14-12) and currently sit ninth in the Ekstraklasa table. The team suffered an away defeat to Zagłębie in their most recent fixture (1-3).

Squad and leaders

Legia’s head coach is 47-year-old Romanian specialist Edward Iordănescu, who has been in charge since July 2025. Previously, he had worked exclusively in his home country, most recently managing the Romania national team for two years and leading them to the Round of 16 at UEFA Euro 2024. The Green-and-Whites’ captain is 28-year-old midfielder Bartosz Kapustka, who has experience playing in England, Germany and for the Poland national team. The team’s top scorers this season are Cameroonian striker Jean-Pierre Nsamé (6 goals), Danish forward Mileta Rajović (5 goals) and Polish midfielder Paweł Wszołek (4 goals and 4 assists). According to Transfermarkt, the club’s most valuable players are left winger Noah Weißhaupt and central midfielder Kacper Urbański, (estimated value is EUR 4 million)

Stadium

Legia’s home ground is the Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw, which has a capacity of 31,800. It was at this venue that Shakhtar played their home UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches during the 2022/23 season.

Head-to-head record

Shakhtar and Legia previously met in official competition in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in the 2006/07 season. On that occasion, the Miners won both matches – 1-0 in Donetsk and 3-2 in Warsaw.
