On the UCL group stage MD 4, Shakhtar played Dinamo Zagreb away

Midway through the group stage, both sides had 4 points apiece, so the head-to-head encounter could be key to their competition for reaching the knockout stages. A fortnight ago, the opponents were tied 2-2 in Kharkiv. In comparison with that encounter, Luis Castro has made two changes in the starting line-up by fielding the Brazilian Dodo at right-back and Viktor Kovalenko in midfield instead of the injured Konoplyanka.

Even half

The Miners tried to get the ball under control from the off and, despite the opponents’ traditionally powerful pressing, were the first to create some dangerous chances and take an early lead. First, Taison's long-ranger went just inches off the post, with Taras Stepanenko trying to head a cross home only to see it miss the target. As early as in the 13th minute, Alan Patrick launched an attack down the centre and fed Moraes on the right side with the latter waiting for the teammate and bringing the ball to the edge of the goal area where the Brazilian volleyed it into the back of the net past Livakovic - 0-1! The Croats rushed to recoup and did the same thing pretty soon. Pyatov saved Petrovic’s attempt, but in the 25th minute Bruno made it past two opponents and nodded the ball delivered from the right into the back of the net. The hosts continued bombarding the Miners’ penalty with lofted crosses counting on the strength of their forwards, while Shakhtar men carried out some blistering attacks (with Taison and Moraes getting offside) and made threats through long-range efforts by Patrick (which were blocked and went wide).

Fantastic ending!

Both teams began the second half with absolute caution, with the game seeing long periods of positional challenges, with next to no danger occurring though. The Blues broke that lull: Leovac burst into the box, but Pyatov and Kryvtsov jointly turned his effort to the crossbar. The visitors responded with a threatening cross by Taison and an attempt by Moraes that ended up being parried away by the goalkeeper. And the main events of the match developed in the last quarter of an hour. In the 74th minute, Luis Castro’s men got a numerical advantage (Moro was sent off after being booked twice) and could have immediately converted it, however, Livakovic showed his great reflexes stopping Matviienko’s point-blank attempt. Yet, the Miners did not retain the majority for a long while, with Marlos earning his second yellow card and seeing the immediate red card in front of him. A few minutes later, the Croats went in front: Petkovic covered the ball with his body for Ivanusec, the latter burst into the penalty area and just fired it to the far corner. The Orange-and-Blacks rushed to equalise, conceding the third one instead ... Ademi flicked home Olmo's cross. That was not the end. In the third injury-time minute, Junior Moraes finished off Kovalenko’s delivery and reduced the gap (2-3). And in the dying seconds, after watching a video replay, Felix Brych pointed to the spot in Dynamo’a box, with Tete stepping up to take it and making his team get level!

3-3 - Shakhtar got another incredible comeback, continuing to compete for the Champions League knockout-phase berth.

On November 10, the Miners will host Dynamo Kyiv in the Ukrainian League. The game at the OSK Metalist kicks off at 17:00. Tickets are available at the stadium ticket office, at the retail outlets in Kharkiv, and online.
