Shakhtar met with Atalanta in the UCL Group Stage MD2 game in Milan
It was absolutely important for both sides to score the first points in the group. The Miners went to Italy without the injured Khocholava, with Luis Castro making one change in the starting lineup by fielding Viktor Kovalenko.
Dynamic half
From the opening minutes, the rivals set a high pace and began to seek their glory near each other’s goals. Already in the 15th minute, the referee regarded Ilcic falling in the penalty area as a reason for awarding a spot-kick, but Pyatov brilliantly coped with the Slovenian’s attempt. The Miners gradually regained control of the ball, calmed the play a bit, but gave one away at the same time: initially, Pasalic hit the post, with Zapata successfully finishing off a cross. The Orange-and-Blacks immediately seized the initiative and started threatening Atalanta’s penalty area over and over again: Marlos’ attempt was turned for a corner, Taison’s attempt was denied, and Alan Patrick sent the ball into the hands of the goalkeeper. And yet, in the 41st minute, the Shakhtar players found their chance: Patrick put Junior Moraes through on goal, with the latter beating the keeper and rolling it into the back of the unguarged net, making it 1-1. And in the dying seconds of the first half, Marlos was close to scoring only to see his powerful attempt hit the crossbar!
Effective substitutions
Luis Castro's team began the second half more actively, with Taison’s another attempt being denied by the defender, with Ismaily's threatening cross ending in a corner-kick. Little by little, Atalanta managed to push the game away from their goal and snap back through a couple of dangerous attacks. Zapata tried to finish off Gomez’s cross, but the ball missed the target, with the same Duvan hitting Pyatov from point-blank range. After that, Kryvtsov averted the threat after Muriel’s finishing, and the Miners responded with long-rangers by Stepanenko (Gollini turned it for a corner) and Kovalenko (just wide). In the end, the hosts could also have netted a goal: Malynovskyi’s tough shot whizzed past the goalpost, with Pyatov coming to the rescue again after Gomez's cannon shot. And in the last injury time minute, the Orange-and-Blacks succeeded in an exemplary counterattack, yielding the result: Dodo raced down the right flank and brought Manor Solomon through on target, while the Israeli made it past the defender and the keeper to hit the back of the net. 2-1 - Shakhtar claimed a comeback win over Atalanta!
At 14:00 on October 6, the Miners will play Dnipro-1 in the Ukrainian League, with the next Champions League game to kick off at 19:55 vs Dinamo Zagreb at the OSK Metalist in Kharkiv on October 22. Tickets are available at the stadium ticket office and online.
