UEFA has announced the winners of the annual Grassroots Football Awards for 2020

Shakhtar has won Silver in the Best Professional Football Club 2020 category.

About the awards

UEFA launched the annual Grassroots Awards in 2010. Each year, the awards showcase the people, projects and places that ensure everyone, regardless of their age, ability, gender or background, can play football in a safe environment – the key objective of UEFA’s grassroots programme. In 2020, 129 nominations were received from 37 different associations.

Best Professional Football Club

There are five different award categories: Best Grassroots Leader, Best Grassroots Project, Best Grassroots Club, Best Disability Initiative, Best Professional Football Club. In each of the categories, they decide on the three award winners. Shakhtar has won Silver in the Best Professional Football Club category this year. In this category, they celebrate the clubs with an inclusive agenda and a specific social goal, taking into account their significant contribution to the development of social initiatives in sports.

“Grassroots football is crucial to the well-being of the game and society across Europe,” the UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin stressed. “As the achievements of the winners demonstrate, it shows how football’s universal popularity can help break stereotypes and connect communities. We only reached our final choices after lots of discussion and deliberation. The strength in depth of the candidates gets stronger every year, making the winners’ achievements even more outstanding.”

Let us remind you that the Shakhtar Social foundation was founded by Shakhtar with the support of its general partner DTEK to implement the Come On, Let’s Play grassroots football project in 36 settlements across Ukraine. In 2020, more than 4,500 children aged 7 to 12 have been involved in it.
