Shakhtar hosted Rukh Lviv in the UPL round 15

This was the Miners’ third match over a week. Therefore, after the victory in Tel Aviv, Luis Castro carried out a minor rotation of the squad: Viktor Korniienko, Tete and Yevhen Konoplyanka appeared in the starting XI. The game itself began with a minute’s silence to honour the memory of Igor Akhmetov.

Early goal

Shakhtar players got off to a brisk start and immediately began to threaten the opposing goal. They opened the scoring already in the 9th minute: Marlos brought Tete through on target, the latter sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and rolled the ball into the back of the net, making it 1-0. The next opportunity occurred midway through the first half. Moraes missed Konoplyanka's pass by inches, and then Bandura coped with Marlos's effort from the edge of the box. The visitors created their first chance closer to the break, with Kukharevych shooting from the corner of the goal area to send the ball just outside the post. Immediately after that, Tete had a chance to score a double, but the Brazilian's strike also lacked accuracy following Korniienko's cross.

Undoubted superiority

In the second half, Maycon came on for Taras Stepanenko and netted the second goal. In the 60th minute, Karasyuk grabbed Vitao by the shirt in the set play situation, with the referee awarding a spot kick after checking VAR. Maycon easily beat the keeper from the spot – 2-0. But even having doubled the lead, the Miners were not going to weaken their grip and continued to confidently control the course of the game: they kept the ball for long periods and played fluidly in the opposing half, constantly keeping the away defenders in suspense. Threatening crosses by Korniienko and Taison were intercepted by the defenders at the last moment, just as they blocked Moraes's attempt. A good opportunity to score the third goal occurred a couple of minutes from time: Solomon burst into the penalty area and shot towards the far corner, with the goalkeeper parrying it away and with Marlos’s finish missing the target. Already in stoppage time, Lviv remained short-handed (Bandura ran out of the penalty area and brought Korniienko down), but the score remained unchanged.

2-0 - Shakhtar defeated Rukh quite easily, and Marlos was named the Man of the Match after having made his 250th appearance with the Orange-and-Blacks.

On February 25, the Miners will host Maccabi Tel Aviv in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 return leg. The meeting will kick off in the presence of spectators at the NSC Olimpiyskiy at 19:55. The tickets are on sale now.
