Shakhtar played the away match against Vorskla in the 30th round of the UPL

The Miners arrived in Poltava already in the status of current champions of Ukraine, having won the title last week in the penultimate round. Head coach of Shakhtar Igor Jovicevic carried out a major rotation of the squad for the final match of the season. Andrii Piatov, legend and captain, played in the goal from the first minutes, the quartet of defenders consisted of Gocholeishvili, Bondar, Topalov and Faryna, for whom it was the first match in the main team. Djurasek, Bondarenko and Ocheretko acted in the midfield line, Kryskiv and Totovytskyi played on the attacking wings, Kelsy had a central forward position.

Penalty and minimal lead of the host team

The teams started the match at a slow pace, observing each other, and the first opportunities appeared already 10 minutes into the game: first, Bondarenko, in a fight with the opponent, shot above the goal, then Djurasek missed the target from outside the penalty area, and Seferi responded to the Orange-and-Blacks by kicking the ball over the crossbar from a few meters. The climax of the first half happened closer to the break: in one of the episodes, the ball bounced into Faryna's hand in the penalty area, the referee reviewed the replay on VAR for a long time and, eventually, awarded a penalty. Seferi's spot-kick was accurate and gave Poltava team a lead. Then, there was another dangerous opportunity near the goal of the visiting team: Kane shot sharply from the wing, Piatov returned a ball in front of him, but the teammates covered for the captain and took the ball away. In the last attack, Kryskiv appeared on the right edge of the penalty area, but instead of shooting, he made a cross to Kelsy, who was in an offside position.

Hlushchenko's debut, Toirov's performance, another goal by Bondarenko

The second half started with an early goal by Vorskla: in the 50th minute Yevhen Pavliuk decided to take a shot from a tight angle and hit between the post and the goalkeeper, doubling the lead. In the 63rd minute, the Miners made first substitutions: Oleksii Shevchenko replaced Andrii Piatov, 19-year-old Anton Hlushchenko made his debut for the first team. In a few minutes Andrii Boriachuk appeared on the field, and a little later 18-year-old Khusrav Toirov came on. The game passed at a calm pace: Shakhtar did not stop trying to fight back, but the organized defence of Viktor Skrypnyk's team nullified the attempts of the visiting team. Poltava players had a good opportunity when Shevchenko saved the team after same Pavliuk's shot into the bottom corner. And in the 71st minute, the host team unexpectedly remained in the minority, when experienced Perduta, who intercepted the ball with his hand, preventing Totovytskyi from running out one on one, received a red card. The Orange-and-Blacks realized their numerical advantage quite quickly: in the 80th minute, Artem Bondarenko outplayed the wall with Kelsy and hit the left corner with a shot from the post. Bondar could have equalized the score, but his header after a corner flew too high. And in the time added by the referee, Isenko pulled the ball out from under the crossbar after Kevin Kelsy's shot. 1-2 – Igor Jovicevic's lads lost to Vorskla.

With this match, Shakhtar end the 2022/23 season, in which they won the UPL gold medals and reached the Europa League Round of 16. The Orange-and-Blacks will represent Ukraine in the UEFA Champions League group stage again in the next season.
