The first leg in Warsaw did not bring any team closer to the next round, ending with draw score of 1-1. The Dutch looked more active, although obvious chances were rare. But the Miners, having coped with personnel losses in the defensive line and withstood the pressure of the opponents, managed to score first: in the 79th minute, Yaroslav Rakitskyi successfully finished Sudakov's corner-kick. However, they couldn’t keep the winning score, Bullaude equalized two minutes before the end of the game.
Igor Jovicevic's men spent almost the entire week between two games against Feyenoord on the road. It took them two days to get from Warsaw to Kryvyi Rih. On Sunday, they claimed there a confident victory over Kryvbas (3-0) owing to goals by Sudakov, Kelsy (debut goal for the club), and Shved, topping the UPL table. And immediately after the match, the team left for Chisinau catching there a flight to Rotterdam (almost 24 hour on the road again). Thus, the Orange-and-Blacks had two training sessions in the Netherlands to prepare for the return match.
Feyenoord filled the break between meetings with the Pitmen with a domestic championship match against Volendam (2-1). Victory over one of the outsiders of the league was not easy for the Rotterdam-based side. Having conceded in the opening minutes of the game, they desperately stormed the visitors' defence throughout the match (77% ball possession, 25 shots on goal) and managed to score already after the break: in the 52nd minute, Santiago Gimenez equalized, and in the 74th minute, own goal by Mirani brought victory to the hosts. These two points allowed Feyenoord to maintain the Eredivisie leadership.
There is no news regarding personnel situation of the Rotterdam team. Bijlow, Timber and Volemark are still absent due to injuries. Alireza Jahanbakhsh's participation in the game against the Miners was in question, but his injury turned out to be minor.
This is the fourth clash between Shakhtar and Feyenoord in history. In the autumn of 2017, the Orange-and-Blacks won twice in the Champions League group stage – 2-1 in Kharkiv and 3-1 in Rotterdam. And a week ago, the teams parted peacefully – 1-1.
The Spanish team of officials headed by Jesus Gil Manzano will be in charge of Feyenoord vs Shakhtar match.
